It took awhile… the first stone was laid back in April, and we were hoping to be able to move in in December 2010. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, this won’t be possible, although we do hope to move there by the beginning of the new school year. In the Philippines the school summer vacation starts at the end of March, and the new school year starts the first week of June. We’re planning to use the Filipino summer months to complete the final building details, and then the opening will hopefully follow in May.

We’ll soon be giving more information about the building project. Then we’ll show drawings of the different floors and photos of the construction.

Lelieta is 14 years old. She lives with her grandmother on the garbage dump. Her parents divorced when Lelieta was just a baby. Her father is in prison. In order to be closer to her son in prison, Lelieta’s grandmother moved to Manila, ultimately ending up on the garbage dump. However, she is too old to work, so Lelieta is the one who does the scavenging, working from 4 o’clock in the afternoon until 8 o’clock in the morning collecting garbage… Twice a week at 11 o’clock Lelieta goes to the Love2Learn center; at least here she can learn something!

Lelieta is a very quiet girl and has a very low sense of self-esteem. Young Focus understands the mental and social problems of such children. That is why one of our goals is to help Lelieta, through coaching, to grow in self-confidence; to help her realize that she is so much more than just a young garbage collector.

60 children between the ages of 6 and 14, who DON’T go to school, are now getting lessons from the Love2Learn teacher April…

All these children live either on or around the garbage dump. Some used to go to school, but because of financial problems or family circumstances they now have to work on the garbage dump.

The HSBC (Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation) is sponsoring this Young Focus one-year project to prepare these children for normal school. Together with the parents, we are looking into the possibilities of sending these children to the local elementary schools starting in the 2010/2011 school year.

Lessons are given to each elementary level through the week. On Saturdays there are extra lessons on life skills assisted by volunteers from the HSBC. Volunteers from partner WE INTERNATIONAL also help us running the program.

A temporary classroom for these children has been built on the garbage dump. Young Focus hopes to be able to build a permanent place there soon – the building sponsored by Wings of Support.

Het heeft even geduurd… in april dit jaar werd de eerste steen gelegd en de hoop bestond toen nog dat we er in december 2010 in zouden gaan. Door onvoorziene omstandigheden gaat dat niet meer lukken, maar we hopen toch voor het begin van het nieuwe schooljaar erin te trekken. Het schooljaar op de Filipijnen begint de eerste week van juni. Eind maart is er al zomervakantie. We gaan er vanuit dat we de Filipijnse zomermaanden kunnen gebruiken om de ‘puntjes op de i’ te zetten. In mei zou dan de opening plaatsvinden.

Binnenkort plaatsen we meer informatie van het bouwproject. We hebben dan tekeningen van de verschillende verdiepingen en foto’s van de bouw.

Lelieta is 14 jaar. Ze woont bij haar oma op de vuilnisbelt. Haar ouders zijn gescheiden sinds ze een baby was. Haar vader zit in de gevangenis. Haar oma is op de vuilnisbelt terecht gekomen toen ze naar Manilla verhuisde om haar vader te kunnen bezoeken in de gevangenis. Oma is te oud om voor Lelieta te zorgen. Daarom moet Lelieta elke dag van 4 uur ‘s middags tot 8 uur ‘s ochtens vuilnis verzamelen… Om 11 uur gaat ze dan naar het Love2Learn project om toch nog iets te leren!

Lelieta is een heel rustig meisje met een laag zelfbeeld. Young Focus kent de mentale en maatschappelijke problematiek van kinderen zoals Lelieta. Daarom is het ook ons doel om haar door coaching een beter zelfbeeld te geven zodat ze beseft dat ze meer is dan een ‘vuilnisverzamelaartje’.
